Radar Plane

What does the Navy call their version of the radar plane? The Air Force version is AWACS, but a don't recall what this one is called.

NHL Second Round Predictions - Better Late Than Never

Okay, so I'm three days late with my second round predictions.  Shoot me.  I was on vacation and my favorite team was eliminated.  Bite me if you don't like it.  Sure one of the four series has already played two games, but that won't stop me from making the wrong pick.  Deal with it.

So how did I do in the first round?  What does it matter, the Bruins lost.

I picked the Rangers over the Senators and the Rangers won.  Yippee.  1/1
I picked the Bruins over the Capitals and the Capitals won and broke my heart.  Bite me.  1/2
I picked the Devils over the Panthers and the Devils won.  Big surprise.  2/3
I picked the Penguins over the Flyers and they suck suck suck suck sucked and the Flyers won.  2/4
I picked the Kings over the Canucks and the Kings won.  Despite my heartache over the Bruins, this is pretty freakin' awesome.  3/5
I picked the Blues over the Sharks and the Blues won.  And the suckfest in San Jose continues.  4/6
I picked the Coyotes over the Blackhawks and the Coyotes won.  And no one on Earth noticed.  5/7
I picked the Predators over the Red Wings and the Predators won.  And no one outside of Detroit noticed.  6/8

Six correct picks out of eight series.  I'd trade them all for a Bruins win.  But alas...

Here are my logic-free picks for the second round.

New York Rangers vs Washington Capitals:
I hate them both so much.  I hate them both with a passion that is burning like a fever.  Words cannot express how much I hate both of these teams.  The Rangers, like the Bruins, slipped a little down the stretch.  They, like the Bruins, are a defense first team.  They, like the Bruins, are going to lose to an eighth seed.  I pick the Capitals and it pains me to no end to do so.  (The Rangers won game one)

Philadelphia Flyers vs New Jersey Devils:
Oh my good christ I do so hate the bedamned Flyers.  I'm picking the Devils out of pure hatred and spite.  The very thought of the Flyers making it to the Conference finals makes me want to vomit fire.  Go Devils.  (The Flyers won game one... are you seeing a pattern developing here?)

St Louis Blues vs Los Angeles Kings:
I am never going to pick against the Kings again.  Really, I feel like I should buy every member of the team a beer (or 10) for the way they beat Vancouver.  My one great fear when I saw Boston matched up against Washington was that Boston would go out in the first round and Vancouver would advance.  Thanks to my Kings that did not happen.  I would pick this Kings team against any team in history that does not include Bobby Orr (with the exception of those Chicago teams he sort of played for), Ray Bourque (with the exception of those Colorado teams he played for), or Cam Neely (with the exception of those Vancouver teams he played for).  The Kings are my team now.  I am a Kings fan from this day forward, until Boston's next training camp of course.  Go Kings.  (The Kings won game one.  Think of this as the exception that proves the rule, okay?)

Phoenix Coyotes vs Nashville Predators:
Your time is up Phoenix.  Time to start packing for Quebec City, or Hamilton, or Saskatoon.  How about St Johns, Newfoundland?  I am picking the Predators because maybe, just maybe, their time has finally come (except for when they play the Kings).  Predators in seven.  (Phoenix has one games one and two.  Yes, I am a moron but at least I am a consistent moron.  Sort of.  I guess.)

There you go.  My second round picks.  At least three of which are going to end up being wrong.

Who cares, my Bruins are done.  The rest of you can bite me.

Go Kings.

What's the absolute worst moment of any vacation?

The moment you wake up and know you have to go back to work.

Today is going to suck mightily.

Dolphins

As mentioned previously, on the first sunny morning, Tuesday it was, we dashed over to Mission Beach at about 7:00am to take advantage of the weather.  We all waded into the ocean.  Maybe 20 feet away from us we started seeing things breaking the surface.  It wasn't constant, but it was pretty regular.  At first I thought it was a whale.  Then we saw a bunch of them, and started getting better, albeit brief, looks.

They were dolphins.  We couldn't tell how many, but it seemed like there might have been a whole pod.  It was so awesome.

Here is one.  You can barely see the fin, but it's there.  Look for the black spot a little lower than the horizon, about a third of the way from the left side of the image.
2012-04-24 - Casio 003

Here's a close crop of two of them.  It's blurry and crummy, but that's because I only had the little Casio point and shoot.  If I had the D90 I could have zoomed a little closer, and maybe seen a little clearer, but they broke the surface so quick that it probably wouldn't have mattered much.
2012-04-24 - Casio 016-001

I know the pictures don't do the moment justice, but for us it was outstandingly amazing to witness.  They were so close we could almost talk to them.  It was magic, really.  What a great moment.

Everything is Up on Flickr

After hours upon hours of internet trials and tribulations, all of my keeper pictures from the trip are up on Flickr.

This particular picture was taken from Point Loma, looking over the cliff down onto the harbor. See those white splashes? Those are dolphins. How much ass does that kick?

Tons.

Sunset

The birds made it so much better.

Sunset

I didn't think we were going to get a shot like this. We finally had a chance on the last night.

Sunset

Is that sky awesome or what?

Sunset

I got a few good sunset pics. Oh I did, I did.

Our New Friend

Now the third party upload program is acting stupid. What a chore! C'mon Flickr, get you act together!

Here is one that went up last night. We made a lot of new friends when we visited La Jolla Cove.

Flickr Woes

Flickr is pissing me off.  I blame yahoo.

I have had to resort to a third party upload program because the new upload program is shit and the old upload program no longer works.

Oh well, at least the Red Sox have won six in a row.  (it is six, right?  I've been out of town)

I will write something about the slime that has ruined any good feelings related to the Bruins this season at some point, and the second round of the playoffs has started and I still haven't posted my predictions.  (like I said, I've been away)

I'll get to it, but I want those damn pictures up first.

Damn it.

Go Red Sox
Go Los Angeles Kings

Unpacking

Unpacking is a drag. Fortunately we packed very light, so it's not too bad.

So last night I was uploading to Flickr. Round about midnight they updated the site with a new upload process. Guess what... It doesn't work. It only takes 100 files at a time and when it finished processing them it hangs, seemingly forever. They still have a link to the old upload routine, but guess what... That doesn't work either.

I haven't tried it today. Hopefully they had a team of developers working all night to fix the bugs... But it's yahoo so somehow I doubt it.

Thanks Flickr!

Panda

He will literally rip your face off.

The pictures are going up to Flickr, but it's going to take a while to get to them all. There are a ton of them.

AGon

I am sitting in bed, uploading the vast number of pictures I took on vacation to Flickr and listening to the Padres play the Giants via the MLB iPhone app.  Twice during the past week I found myself apologizing to Padres fans for the Red Sox stealing their first baseman, Adrian Gonzales.  Just now I heard a commercial for a car insurance company in San Diego that was still using AGon as their spokesman.

We Boston sports fans do not know what it's like to have our major league clubs act as farm teams for the more financially successful teams.  Hopefully we never will.  Spend your money, oh Boston pro sports franchises, spend your money.

We are Back

Home

I can't believe it's over... Again.

We are home safe and sound. Exhausted and wishing we could turn right around and head back.

Nana and Papa are driving home. The kids are at their Dad's.

Our super week has come to an end. It was fantastic.

Phase One - Complete

San Diego to Detroit, successfully completed.

Phase Two commences in four minutes. Detroit to Boston.

Next stop: Red Sox Nation.

The Last Night

It's a little past 10:00pm Pacific time. The bags are 98% packed. The alarm clocks are set for a pre-dawn wake up. We are all clear for an early morning check out.

The first time I came to San Diego was our honeymoon in 2009. When it was time to go home I was sad and did not want to leave.

The second time I came here was last August. Leaving was painful. Leaving felt like a mistake. I was dreading heading back to the real world.

This time is probably not as bad as last time, but it's close. Jen and I both feel like we belong here. We talked about it rationally the other day. We know that if we moved here all of the things that we try to escape by coming here would just follow us, but somehow that doesn't seem so bad.

Obviously we can't stay. The kids are the main reason. It's hard enough being without them for a few days a week, imagine how awful it would be if their two parents lived on opposite coasts. We would miss my family as well, and I don't want to be so far away from them. As for our friends... Well... I bet we could convince most of them to come with us. Heh heh

There are so many reasons not to stay here, and only one reason to stay: We love it here. In the end, the other reasons win out. But the more we visit San Diego, the more like home it becomes, and the harder it gets to leave.

Wish us a safe trip tomorrow.

Thanks.

Paradise

Sitting on the roof deck, watching the ocean waves crashing on the shore down the street, feeling the breeze coming off the water.

This place is paradise.

Friday

We leave early tomorrow morning, so today is our last day. We were hoping to spend it lazing on the beach, but the forecast of abundant sunshine is taking its sweet time developing.

In other news, I don't want to go home tomorrow... Or ever.

Seafront Village

Rain Rain Go Away

We had been seeing nasty forecasts for yesterday and today. Rain, thunderstorms, ugliness, but it held off for most of the day yesterday, and it was actually sunny and beautiful. Then the storm came roaring in over night and it poured. At least it was pouring like mad on the couple of times I woke up last night.

Today it's still cloudy, but the dark clouds are breaking up and the blue sky is peeking through. I guess mother nature was just messing with us. Thanks, mother nature!

Storm Coming

Looking out at the ocean as the storm rolls in.

How-To

Today on the, How-To show I will tell you how to build your own drive-in movie theater.

First, take your car and your best gal and park somewhere that isn't too noisy.

Next take an iPhone and log into the Netflix app. Chose a title to stream. I recommend an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Finally, prop the iPhone up on the dashboard and enjoy the film. Popcorn is optional, but smooching your sweetie is highly encouraged.

Enjoy!

Game Seven

Today at 4:30 Pacific time...

Game seven...

One more chance to advance...

Winner moves on, loser goes home...

I will try to eat some smart food today. It worked last year, right?

Go Bruins!

Sun!

We took advantage of a clear sunny morning and walked 2 blocks to mission beach. As we were cooling our heels in the cold ocean we noticed a bunch of dolphins goofing off about 20 feet away from us.

Paradise indeed.

Here's an attempt at a 360 degree panorama from our roof. I don't know how it will look here, but whatever...

Rush Tickets

Opening night in Manchester? Oh yeah, we are going.

A month later in Boston? Oh yeah, we are going to that one too.

The pre sale was a success. Stressful success, but still a success.

The Weather

How do you know that Robbie is in Southern California?

When the forecast includes a severe weather alert that mentions rain at the coast, rain in the mountains, and rain in the desert.

Yes, you read that correctly.

I don't care, I love it here and I am never leaving this place.

On-Vacation NHL Update

The Bruins lost yesterday and trailed in the series three games to two. Facing elimination today the came back and won game six, forcing game seven.

Go Bruins!

Oh yeah, and the mighty L.A. Kings eliminated the Canucks tonight. Is Vancouver rioting right now?

Note: I'm not mentioning the Red Sox. After yesterday's travesty, I might not ever mention them again.

Go Bruins!

Seals

We went to La Jolla today and saw the seals laying on the beach.

AWESOME!

I'd have Nikon pics but the wifi here is so slow that uploading what I have so far would take 17 months.

California Hates Me

You can always tell when I'm in Sunny Southern California.

You can tell because it's cloudy and foggy and cool.

Ahhh, mother nature just loves me.

Not complaining though, this is still heaven.

Happy 100th birthday, Fenway Park.  You are a beautiful crap hole and you should have been torn down 30 years ago and fat people (like me) can't fit in your seats and tall people (like me) can't fit in your aisles, but we love you anyway.

Official Rush Tour Dates Released

Rush officially released their 2012 Fall tour dates today.  Are they different than the leaked dates I posted before?

There is one huge concern for me.  Both the Manchester (opening night!) and Boston shows go on sale at the same time.  That's going to cause some issues.  I don't know how I am going to handle that.  I doubt they will sell out immediately, but I really don't want to have to mess with resellers or brokers.  I hate being scalped.

Also, to the anonymous commenter who complained that there was no Kansas City show.  Umm... sorry.  Maybe they'll be a second leg to this tour.  They've done that for the last two.  Maybe Kansas City will be included then.  Personally, I'd make the 4 hour drive to St Louis, but that's just me.  I mean I drove from Boston to Saratoga Springs, NY for a Rush show and that was close to four hours.  I also drove from Boston to Hershey, PA for a Rush show and that was over seven hours... so maybe I'm a bad example.

Anyway...  RUSH TOUR!  WOOHOO!!!

So Close

We are getting soooo close.

NHL First Round Updates

Have you been following the NHL playoffs so far?  It's been ugly.  Have we set a league record for suspensions in the first round yet?  There have been cheap shots and dirty play in almost every series.  It's odd.  The league spent so much time trying to clean up head shots this year and then the minute the playoffs start they seem to increase exponentially.  Weird.

I thought I'd take a minute this morning and check on the status of my predictions for the first round.  Two series had elimination games last night, but in both cases the team with the lead failed to put their opponent away.  That means all eight series are still in progress.

Rangers vs Senators?  I figured it would be easy for the Rangers to take this, but right now the series is tied at two games a piece.  You have to give Ottawa credit for hanging in there, although I still expect the Rangers to come out on top.

Bruins vs Capitals?  I was afraid of this.  I was afraid that the Capitals would make this close.  I did not expect their third string goalie to be lights out the way he's been, and I did not expect Washington to out defend a defense first system.  Still, the Bruins have a two games to one lead and while they seemed to lack any real emotional interest in games one and two, after game three they are definitely all in.  I'm really looking forward to game four tonight.  Hopefully game three broke the Caps spirit a little and the B's will have an easier time.  Hopefully.

Panthers vs Devils?  I have to admit, this one has flown way under my radar.  I did catch a little of game three and saw the Devils blow a 3-0 lead.  That's got to hurt.  Florida leads the series two games to one.  This is one of the series that hasn't seemed to have any over the top violence.  I picked New Jersey in this one, and my prediction seems to be headed for trouble.

Penguins vs Flyers?  Can you say, hate?  Can you say, goons?  Can you say, cheap?  Can you say, WTF?  This series has been a mess.  The Penguins had leads in all of the first three games and somehow managed to lose them all.  The got slaughtered in games two and three, but then with elimination on the line they scored 10 goals last night.  What the hell is going on here?  The cheap shots and dirty play are off the charts in the series.  I picked the Penguins and they are making me look bad.

Canucks vs Kings?  The Penguins are making me look bad, but the Kings are making me look like an effin' GENIUS!  They lead the series three games to one after blowing an elimination opportunity last night.  When I went to bed last night after the first period they had the lead.  Oh well.  Roberto Luongo is now pretty much officially Vancouver's back up goalie.  This series has been a thing of beauty.

Blues vs Sharks?  I haven't caught a second of any of these games.  The Blues lead the series two games to one, which is right in line with my prediction.  Still, this series has been way off my radar.

Coyotes vs Blackhawks?  This series was off my radar too until two nights ago.  I watched in horror as the dirty play was brought to new heights.  Marion Hossa is out of the hospital, which is good.  Raffi Torres hopefully will not play again this season, which is very much deserved.  I flipped a coin and picked Phoenix.  After seeing that cheap shot from Torres, I wish the coin had flipped the other way... although Phoenix is up two games to one.

Predators vs Red Wings?  I haven't seen very much of this series, but I have been paying attention.  I picked Nashville and they are now up three games to one.  The dirty play has been showing up here too, and I am not happy about it.  Still, I want Nashville to advance and the numbers say they probably will.

So there you go.  No sweeps this round.  Lots of over the top cheap, violent play, and the Bruins are up two games to one.  Let's see how it all plays out.

Go Bruins

Rush Tour Dates Leaked

Yesterday the fantastic Rush fan blog, rushisaband.com posted some leaked tour dates for this fall.  The word on the street is that the official tour date announcement is going to be tomorrow, along with the release to radio of the next single, "Headlong Flight".  For critical Rush fanatics like me though, tomorrow is just too long a wait, so last night Jen and I started fantasizing about which shows to see.  The first leaked date is in September and it is at the Verizon in Manchester, NH.  There is also a Boston show in October at the Garden.  Those two are definite must sees.  What about a road trip though?  last tour we went to New York and Hershey, PA.  In the past we've gone to Milwaukee, WI, and Saratoga Springs, NY, and Uncasville, CT, as well as more shows in New York and Manchester.

What about Las Vegas on 11/23 and Phoenix on 11/25?

What about going to Buffalo, NY on 10/26, two days after the Boston Garden show, and visiting Niagara Falls while we're there?  I need a passport to visit the Canadian side though, so there is prep work to be done there.

Well... if we're already discussing getting a passport... why not start thinking of Toronto on 10/14?  Toronto... the band's home town... Of all the places in the world to go see Rush, that is the place.  I don't care how successful a band is, or how long they've been playing together, the home show is always a great show.

October 14th at the Air Canada Center in Toronto...

I'll print up a passport application right now.

Bruins Win Game 3

Here are the highlights to last night's game. Odd that they left out Marchand getting slashed in what the WWF used to call, "the lower abdominal area." In other words, he took a slash to the mommy/daddy button. Right in the baby maker.

This does show Backstrom cross checking Peverley square in the face as the game ended. He got a match penalty for that one, and that means a one game suspension. His coach, notorious cheap shot artist Dale Hunter, says that "Nicky" was protecting himself.

I bet the air smells sweet on what ever planet Dale Hunter lives on.

Game four is Thursday.

iMessage

My beautiful wife (did you see the picture I posted? She looks great, doesn't she?) and I went out for a late dinner tonight. While we were eating, my step kids started texting (iMessaging actually) us. We were all firing messages back and forth and being super goofy. It was so much fun. My step daughter is already well versed in text slang. She's not even 11 yet. The teenage years are going to be very interesting. Heh heh

Sweetie Got a New Do

Early for Dinner

Weekend in Review

This weekend I cleaned the bathroom, cleaned the kitchen, cleaned the dining room, cleaned the mud room, cleaned the hallway, watched the Bruins lose in double overtime, recorded some guitars onto two old songs that I am finally getting around to finishing, watched the Red Sox win, had dinner with the love of my life, watched some Big Bang theory, went to sleep but had a really hard time staying asleep, woke up, got my hair cut, ran a couple of errands, started working on finishing another old song (that brings me to four currently in progress), celebrated my father's 70th birthday with brunch at the Westford Regency hotel, marveled at how ridiculously cute my niece and three nephews are, went shopping with my wife to try and get a few things we and the kids need for our trip to San Diego, did some more work on one of those old songs, did a truck load of laundry, finally folded the ten billion unfolded socks that have been sitting in a laundry basket for ever, had dinner with the love of my life, cleaned up a little bit around the living room, but not too much, followed the Red Sox online as they won again, watched a show on the History channel about exploring the wreckage of the Titanic, commented to the love of my life that watching that show was sort of like watching grave robbers in action, watched in shock as the History channel lowered itself to the lowest point in television history by airing a reality show where the contestants learned to joust, went to bed and slept like the dead until just before the alarm went off this morning.

Did I miss anything?
