Slim Fast Hell

I jumped on the weight loss bandwagon on Sunday.  My plan is simple.  No soda at all.  No caffeine (because kicking my caffeine addiction will help me not drink soda, as soda is my only source of caffeine).  Slim Fast (style) meal replacements for breakfast and lunch.

On Sunday we went out to lunch and I had diet coke.  Oh well.  On Monday I was discombobulated when leaving the house and I forgot my breakfast and lunch shakes and ended up getting a chicken sandwich (the usual) at the cafe at work.  I also had one coke zero and one diet coke.

Yesterday was the first day I did everything according to plan.  No soda and shakes for lunch and breakfast.  I was very proud of myself, even though it was only one day.

Today?  OH MY GOD I AM STARVING!!!!  I will have my shake at 1:00pm (10 minutes from now) but a couple of people just came back from the cafe with their lunch and oh my god it smells so good!  I had a shake for breakfast.  Other than that I've had nothing but water.  So far I am on track, but it's only day two and it's already soooo difficult.  I WANT A COKE AND A CHICKEN SANDWICH DAMN IT!

Not weighing as much as a small car is worth it.  Reducing my risk of a heart attack before I turn 50 is worth it.

It is worth it
It is worth it
It is worth it

  1. Rob, I can tell you from experience: Slim Fast doesn't work. Have you seen me? And the size I've been for several years now? Trust me. Slim. Fast. Does. Not. Work.

But, it's going to be difficult for you to do it other ways because of the amount of foods you actually dislike! I mean vegetables, especially. I've been reading the South Beach diet, and it seems to make a lot of sense. But I'm not sure you'd be OK with it because they want you to minimize carbs, especially the first two weeks, and then just add them back gradually.

For us, there's plenty of foods we don't like -- fish being the major category. So it's hard for us to go with some of these strict diets too. And Sherm very much enjoys things like potatoes, white rice, noodles, pasta -- everything that's terrible for you. Not to mention bread -- the worst possible thing to eat!

Anyway, my advise is to lay off the Slim Fast. It's only a false promise. Been there, done that, about a bazillion times. Just trying to help...

  2. I've done all right with slim fast in the past. I think I dropped 30 pounds once. I see it more like a way to force myself to eat smaller portions. If the shake is all I get then that's all I get. Sometimes when I "diet" I just end up skipping between meal snacks and then I eat 10 tons of everything at each meal. Also, because I don't like to eat... well... anything, a shake at each meal takes away the need to try and find something that I do like. I don't see it as a permanent solution to my bad eating habits, I just see it as a way to get the ball rolling.

  3. OK, now I get it -- you don't want to have to figure out exactly what to eat and how much so it's easier to just do the Slim Fast. Actually, that's why I used Slim Fast too! So I 100% get it. It's so much easier. In contrast, we're now supposed to figure out exactly what to eat in order to get about 40 carbs per meal and maybe 15 for a couple of between-meal snacks. And let me tell you, I wish they would just say to us, "OK for breakfast you can have an egg and one slice of toast and 4 oz. of orange juice. For lunch you can have 1/2 sandwich with very little mayo but all the lettuce you want, and a couple of thin slices of deli meat. For dinner you can have a piece of steak, 1/2 cup of potatoes and two different vegetables as long as they're not peas or corn." That would make life a heck of a lot easier. Instead we have to scratch our heads figuring out if that sugar-free pudding has a ton of carbs in it, or maybe we should eat soup for lunch and have nothing to drink but water all day, or maybe... well you get the drift. So keep on keeping on with the Slim Fast!!!
